Kay loved drawing since childhood. She was inspired by the beautiful Mourne Mountains, where she grew up, and the poetry read to her as a child.
She began painting in oils, moved to watercolour and then to pastel. Now she enjoys mixed media, inks and collage to add textures and a third dimension to her work.
Her 2016 exhibitions in Lisburn and Belfast were themed on the poetry of WB Yeats and extended her practice and imagination as an artist. The mystical writings of Yeats engendered colourful dreams and enabled her to form new ideas and create colourful semi-abstract work which proved highly successful.
Her favourite artists include Rembrandt, Klimt and Rosie McClelland.
Kay has contributed much to the Pastel Society of Ireland, from it’s inception, including 4 years as Chairperson.
“I was among six founding members 3 men and 3 women on our first Committee and my first job was as “scribe “ during submission day for our inaugural exhibition. I used to collect Larry Mc EIwaine and drive him to our Meetings usually held in Sam’s home Milltown Gallery on Sunday afternoons. I began as Assistant Secretary first then Committee Member for three periods of 3 years ( as required by the Constitution - I took a break of one year off Committee before returning.”
Also, Kay is a Past President of the Ulster Society of Women Artists
